MUSEUMS AND MONUMENTS: The ticket offices close 45 minutes or 1 hour before the scheduled closing times of the museums or monuments. In most cases visitors under 18 and over 65 may visit the museums and monuments free of charge or at reduced costs, depending on the museums and monuments. During the summer months, Rome's largest museums and monuments open for longer hours, including in the evening. Most of the museums and monuments are closed on Mondays. Wheelchair access is available in most of them, but is better to call in advance and ask.

Museums in Rome

Ara Pacis Augustae: The monumental altar inaugurated on 30 January 9 a.C. to celebrate the military successes in Gaul and Spain and consecrate peace in the empire.

The Baracco Museum: Collections of ancient sculptures, Egyptian, Assyrian, Cypriot, Etruscan, Greek, Roman and medieval.

Capitoline Museums: A rich collection of antique sculptures with a colossal statue of River god. Gallery with statues, marbles from the Roman Villas, busts, vases, mosaics and frescoes.

Caracalla Bath: Ancient public thermae, among the most attractive in the city. Ruins of public piscinae, stadium and statues.

Colosseum (Flavius Amphitheatre): The most stupendous monument of ancient Rome used for gladiatorial combats and for hunts with the slaughter of many gladiators and wild animals also floated for naval battles.

Domus Aurea (Nero's Villa): One of the most amitious project of ancient Rome. Nero's palace enterely decorated with ''grotesques'' where was found the Laocoon.

Mausoleum of Augustus: The dynastic tomb of the emperor and his family built by Augustus in 29 b.C..

Municipal Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art: A rapresentative panorama of Italian art from the end of the last century and contemporary art.

National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art: One of the largest collection of paintings, sculptures, and graphic art by artists, mostly Italian, from the last century to the present day. The gallery also has very vast library and specialised archives.

National Museum of Palazzo Venezia: Important collections of sculptures, as well as collections of porcelain and ceramics, enamel paintings and silverware.

Palazzo Corsini: Fourteenth to eighteenth century paintings. Among the most important artists represented: Beato Angelico, Rubens, Poussin.

Quirinal's Stables: Originally the summer residance of the Pope then a pontifical palace, became in 1944 the official residence of the President.

Roman Forum, Palatine, Basilica of Maxentius, Antiquarium Palatino and Loggia Mattei: Undubtably the most stupendous ancient area in Rome, including temples, remains of ancient basilicas and sacred areas, meeting places of political and cultural life. The Palatine, one of the seven hills of Rome, contains the most ancient relix of the city. A visit to the Palatine is of surpassing archaeological interest.

Roman National Museum at Palazzo Massimo: Situated inside Palazzo Massimo, the museum represents the most important collection of roman art and important Livia's house frescoes and roman sarcophagus.

S. Angel's Castel: Mausoleum begun by Emperor Hadrian transformed by Aurelian into the head of a fortified bridge, used for the first time as a prison. Later used by Popes as a fortress. A wonderful view can be enjoyed from the terrace.

Trajans Markets and the Imperial Forum: They were ancient shops on different storeys used as an exchange marked and buisness negotiation. One of the best panorama of the city center. Temples in marble, columns and most important monuments of ancient/classical Rome. Affording views of great beauty.

Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, The Raphael Rooms and Loggias Citta del Vaticano: An extraordinarily important museum complex in virtue of the works kept there and the sumptuous premises in which they are exhibited.

CATACOMBS ON THE APPIAN WAY: Burial sites for Christians including marthyrs from the second half of the 2nd Century to the 5th Century A.D. Note: over the year most Catacombs close for one full month, usually between November and February.

ANCIENT OSTIA: Excavations at Ancient Ostia / Scavi di Ostia Antica
Ostia is comparable to a little Pompei. It was the ancient port of Rome founded in IV Centry b.C. As the power of Rome became greater, Ostia became more important mainly as a Navy base, but also as the "Emporium of Rome". About 30 minutes from the city of Rome.

TIVOLI: Villa D'Este

FRASCATI: Villa Aldobrandini
